We introduce here our latest ‘smart laser projector’ prototype, i.e., a modified laser-based projector capable of augmenting all kind of surfaces while simultaneously using the laser as a scanning beam used for gathering information about that surface shape, texture, reflectivity, relative motion, etc. This device fits in many ways the definition of a ‘smart projector’ but presents a number of advantages with respect to the classical ‘projector/camera’ configuration. We demonstrate this new prototype through a number of interactive applications, such as a laser spot that runs on contours of drawings or bounces on flat figures as well as over the edges of three-dimensional objects. Another application is the simulation of the refraction of light beams on a 2d surface, by simulating the Snell-law computed at the interfaces of gray level regions on a flat drawing.

The Image Fulgurator is a device for physically manipulating photographs. It intervenes when a photo is being taken, without the photographer being able to detect anything. The manipulation is only visible on the photo afterwards.
In principle, the Fulgurator can be used anywhere where there is another camera nearby that is being used with a flash. It operates via a kind of reactive flash projection that enables an image to be projected on an object exactly at the moment when someone else is photographing it. The intervention is unobtrusive because it takes only a few milliseconds. Every photo another photographer takes of an object at which the Fulgurator is also aimed is affected by the manipulation. Hence visual information can be smuggled unnoticed into the images of others.
